close to Grand Canyon

Williams, AZ is the closest town to the Grand Canyon, and its economy depends on visitors to the Grand Canyon. The Holiday Inn is a typical roadside inn with reasonably clean rooms and a below-average restaurant -- but at least you can eat there. If you're going to the Grand Canyon, try to get reservations in the park. Williams is probably a good place to stay with kids if you can't get lodgings in the park -- it has a staged shootout in the street every night -- but if we were going again and couldn't stay in the park, I think I'd try Sedona.
